The rapid degradation of biological diversity around the world ranks among the foremost environmental issues in the 21st century. To address this colossal problem, 190 nations signed a Convention on Biological Diversity. In recognition of the Convention, Taiwan’s Executive Yuan approved the National Biodiversity Action Plan in 2001. To bring together experts to study this issue, with the approval of the MOE, NTU established a Biodiversity Research Center in December 2001.
ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS Center has a 15 member Consultation Commission to oversee the research work; it also has a director in charge of its six divisions:
1. Resource Conservation
2. Sustainable Resources Usage
3. Socioeconomics and Humanities
4. Education and Training
5. International Cooperation
6. Information Services
Each division is headed by an NTU faculty member. The heads are nominated by the director of the Center, and appointed by the NTU President.
WORK REPORT The purpose of the Center is to integrate, coordinate and provide services for relevant departments and institutes within NTU to conduct research and instruction according to established principles of biodiversity maintenance and sustainable usage of biological resources.
